Today, the Parliamentary Committee approved an amendment proposed by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to the Elections Act, aiming to prohibit elections from being held during the holy month of Ramadan.

The Election Commission recently announced March 17 as the date for the upcoming parliamentary elections, coinciding with the first week of Ramadan.

In response, MDP Parliament member for the Ihavandoo Constituency, Mohamed Shifau proposed the amendment to the Election Act, advocating that elections should not be conducted during Ramadan. Instead, the amendment suggests holding elections 10 days after the conclusion of Ramadan.

The committee unanimously passed the amendment, thus altering the law to schedule elections 10 days post-Ramadan. Additionally, the committee made some adjustments to the bill, incorporating amendments proposed by the Election Commission.
