South Hulhumalé MP Dr. Ahmed Shamheed has urged the government to stop the practice of stopping, questioning, and checking foreign workers on the streets after midnight, calling the measures illegal and discriminatory.
Dr. Shamheed described the nighttime checks as racist, unconstitutional, and inhumane, saying police and authorities must abide by the law, and that no one, including President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, is above it.
He called on the Human Rights Commission, the Prosecutor General’s Office, and the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee to take action against the practice, warning that such treatment of foreigners would be unacceptable in other countries.
President Muizzu had issued an order requiring authorities to stop and question foreigners in public places between 12:00 am and 6:00 am, following complaints that some foreign residents were acting against public interest and social norms during the night.
Dr. Shamheed said the government treats foreigners like animals and stressed that such racial discrimination must stop immediately.
