Bank of Maldives (BML), Visit Maldives, and UnionPay have signed an agreement to collaborate on a joint marketing initiative aimed at enhancing digital payment experiences and promoting the Maldives as a top travel destination for UnionPay cardholders.
Under the partnership, the three parties will launch coordinated marketing campaigns highlighting the Maldives’ unique offerings to attract more visitors. Additionally, BML has been appointed as the settlement agent bank for UnionPay transactions in MVR, establishing a local framework for deeper cooperation and potential UnionPay card issuance opportunities.
BML CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef said the collaboration strengthens both the digital payment ecosystem and efforts to support the tourism industry. He added that the Bank’s role as a settlement agent underscores its commitment to secure, convenient, and seamless payment solutions.
BML currently accepts UnionPay cards via POS terminals and its merchant portal and supports payments across all major card networks and digital wallets, including BML Pay, WeChat Pay, Alipay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Through its Merchant Portal and mPOS App, the Bank provides merchants with tools to generate real-time payment requests, monitor transactions, and efficiently manage online store operations.
