Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has accused President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of stripping constitutional powers from state institutions and centralizing authority, saying the real “reset” needed is in leadership—not the system.

Speaking at the PNF Reset rally at Artificial Beach, Yameen alleged that President Muizzu has interfered in investigations, obstructed institutions, and cut the entire system in one hand. He said this has deprived the public of constitutional safeguards.

Yameen also criticized Muizzu for failing to deliver on his promise to end prolonged pre-trial detention, noting that people continue to remain in custody for a year or more. He argued that only major drug cases and terrorism financing should justify extended remand.

He further questioned President Muizzu’s public remarks, saying the gap between his campaign promises and his current decisions is so wide that no one can trust him.

Yameen also asked whether the Maldives should reset the system—or reset the President instead, insisting that Muizzu himself needs a reset.
