The Election Commission has said that additional budget will be needed if the upcoming parliamentary elections are delayed.
The Parliament elections are scheduled for March 17.
However, the opposition MDP has also introduced a bill to prevent the election from being held during Ramadan. The MDP proposed to hold the election within 10 days of the end of the month of Ramadan if the date coincides with the month of Ramadan.
Election Commission Vice-President Ismail Habeeb said the allowance of MVR 1,000 given now to the officials would have to be increased to MVR 3,000 if the Parliament Elections are delayed. Their daily allowance will also increase, Habeeb said, adding that a lot of money has to be spent on officials.
