Hussain Fahmy, Managing Director of STELCO, has issued a plea for energy conservation, urging the public to minimize electricity usage during the anticipated hottest period of the year. In a statement posted on X, Fahmy highlighted the forecast from the National Meteorological Agency, emphasizing the need for caution, especially during the upcoming month of Ramadan.

Fahmy revealed alarming statistics, indicating that current electricity consumption in the Greater Male' area has surged to 104.7 MW, exceeding the average monthly consumption of 94 MW. Against this backdrop, he called upon individuals to reduce electricity expenditure, utilize energy judiciously, and prioritize conservation efforts during this critical period.

Echoing Fahmy's concerns, the Meteorological Office has emphasized that March and April typically witness the highest temperatures of the year. Factors such as low clouds, minimal winds, and high humidity contribute to elevated temperatures, exacerbating the heatwave conditions.

Moreover, with this year being an El Niño year, the Meteorological Office anticipates further temperature escalation. Daytime temperatures are expected to peak around 14:00, intensifying the heatwave and necessitating proactive measures to mitigate its impact.

As the nation braces for soaring temperatures, STELCO's appeal for energy conservation underscores the collective responsibility to preserve resources and alleviate strain on the electrical grid. By adopting energy-saving practices, individuals can contribute to environmental sustainability while safeguarding against potential power shortages during peak demand periods.
