Abdullah Shahid, former Foreign Minister, has assumed the presidency of the opposition's primary party, MDP, by default, as no other candidates emerged before the nomination deadline elapsed.

With the closure of the nomination window, Shahid stood as the sole applicant for the position, thereby securing his election without the need for a formal voting process.

Shahid, renowned for his tenure as the speaker of the Parliament and the President of the UN General Assembly, brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles in senior governmental positions.

The vacancy in the MDP Presidency arose following the resignation of the former President, Mohamed Nasheed. In the aftermath of the last presidential election, the party's national assembly conferred leadership responsibilities to President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih, who had previously held the position of party leader.
