Parliament approves to hold Parliamentary elections after the month of Ramadan.

Ihavandu MP Mohammed Shifau has proposed an amendment to the General Election Act to change the election to be held 10 days after the end of the month of Ramadan.

The bill was passed by the parliament today without any further amendments as passed by the special committee formed to study the bill. 46 members voted in favor of the bill while three members voted against it.

The amendment to Article 43 of the General Elections Act states that no election shall be held on a day of Ramadan unless otherwise provided in this Act or any other Act. If the date of the election coincides with the month of Ramadan, the election shall be held 10 days after the end of the month of Ramadan.

The Election Commission has announced the date of the upcoming parliamentary elections on March 17. The day coincides with the first week of Ramadan.
