The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has become the largest recipient of the state budget allocation to political parties this year.

The Election Commission today announced that the state budget will allocate MVR 44 million to political parties this year. Of this, MVR 15 million goes to the MDP, which has the most members.

According to EC figures, as of 31 December 2023, the MDP had 52,142 members. Therefore, the state budget will allocate MVR 15,101,580.43 to the party.

The next largest party is the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). The party has 36,223 members and is scheduled to receive MVR 10,491,054.20.

The People’s National Congress (PNC) has 28,201 members and is scheduled to receive MVR 8,072,689.58. Meanwhile, the JP has 18,349 members and is scheduled to receive MVR 5,314,312.83.

With the least number of members, the Adalat Party and the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) are eligible to receive less financial support compared to the rest of the parties. According to the Elections Commission, there are 8,796 members in the Adalat Party, and MVR 2,547,533.69 will be paid to the party. The MDA has 8,555 members, and MVR 2,477,734.28 will be paid to the party.
