The MDP Parliamentary Group has cautioned that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu may breach the Constitution if he fails to ratify the Election Bill after its reapproval by Parliament.

The Election Bill, aimed at preventing elections during Ramadan, was once again approved by the Maldivian Parliament today, following the President's decision to return the Fifth Amendment Bill to the Elections General Act for reconsideration. Addressing the media in a press conference today, Thulhaadhoo MP Hisaan Hussain, speaking on behalf of the MDP Parliamentary Group, emphasized that failure to pass the bill this time would constitute a breach of constitutional obligations on the part of the President.

Hisaan clarified that once a bill is passed for a second time by Parliament, the President is legally obligated to ratify it, with no discretion to do otherwise. Quoting previous rulings by the Supreme Court, Hisaan underscored that once Parliament reapproves a bill returned by the President, immediate ratification is mandated.

Mohamed Rasheed Hussain (Bigey), the Alifushee MP, has expressed that the President should not have any reason to refuse ratification if the bill is passed for the second time by the Parliament. Bigey also referred to the Supreme Court's precedent, which mandates the immediate approval of bills when they are passed for the second time by the Parliament.
