There is no technology in the world to build an underwater tunnel, even with 40 billion USD, MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail has said.

Fayyaz made the statement at a joint press conference held by MDP and The Democrats to announce a joint venture.

Speaking at the press conference, MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail said while the government is talking about an underwater tunnel connecting Ras Male' and Male' City, the government has not announced whether such a major project is feasible or how it will be funded.

"That underwater tunnel, I am sure there is no technology in the world to build a tunnel like that at $30-40 billion. When a person in the position of President of Maldives and an engineer say such a thing, you should know whether it is feasible or not," Fayyaz said.

Fayyaz suggested connecting all the Maldives islands through underwater tunnels and railways, but he deemed it infeasible despite the available technology.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced Malé and Ras Malé to be connected via an underwater tunnel while addressing the oath-taking ceremony of the Malé City Council’s newly elected Mayor and Councilors.

The President detailed that the underwater tunnel connecting Malé and Ras Malé would entail a railway on which tourists can observe the underwater beauty, adding that this new infrastructure project would contribute immensely to the tourism industry. The President stated that the Administration had already begun working on the feasibility studies for the project and that it would seek potential developers with the technical capacity to build the tunnel.
