Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the right to assembly and expression must not be curtailed, calling on the government to immediately release fishermen arrested during a peaceful protest held on Fishermen’s Day.

In a post shared on X, Nasheed condemned the arrests and said efforts to restrict peaceful assembly and expression should not continue.

Nasheed specifically called for the release of Mohamed Sodiq, Abdul Latheef Ahmed, and Mohamed Mustafa, fishermen who were detained during the protest.

While Nasheed highlighted that the right to assembly and expression should not be disrupted, over the past two years, several individuals in the Maldives have been arrested and charged in connection with peaceful protests. However, following public criticism, the Prosecutor General’s Office later decided not to proceed with many of these cases.
