The current ruling coalition party, PPM, has announced its support in changing the date of the 20th Parliamentary elections.

This year's parliamentary elections are scheduled for March 17, which falls during the second week of Ramadan.

However, there is still a possibility of postponing the parliamentary elections, PPM vice-president and fisheries minister Ahmed Shiyam said today. According to him, the Election Commission scheduled the election without any prior agreement between Political Parties in the Maldives.

Moreover, MDP has also asked the EC to hold the elections after Ramadan.

The 19th Parliament's current term will end on May 28 this year. According to the law, the elections must be held 120 days before the end of the parliamentary term. The Election Commission has stated that if the election is to be postponed until the end of Ramadan, the law must be amended.

PPM Shiyam also mentioned that if the people are concerned about the election date, the PPM will support the Parliament to hold an extraordinary session to change the date.
