Southwest Pakistan was rocked by tragedy as an explosion within a coal mine resulted in the loss of 12 miners' lives, with eight fortunate enough to be rescued, an official disclosed on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in Harnai, Baluchistan province, where the bodies of the deceased were recovered following an overnight collapse, reported mine inspector Abdul Rashid.

As investigations continue to determine the cause of the blast, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif conveyed his condolences over the tragic loss of lives.

The coal mining industry in Pakistan has long been plagued by safety concerns, with recurrent accidents and explosions due to the frequent disregard for safety standards, leaving miners vulnerable to perilous working conditions. Despite the dangers and low wages, hundreds of miners persist in Baluchistan, where unemployment rates surpass those in other regions of the country.
