In a massive effort to tidy up the city, authorities have successfully cleared 39.6 tonnes of garbage from the streets over the past day and night. The cleanup operation involved the removal of waste using a fleet of pickups, with a total of 33 vehicles deployed for the task.

The cleanup initiative, spearheaded by the city council, has been in full swing since the beginning of Ramadan. Mayor Adam Azim highlighted the council's commitment to addressing the growing issue of garbage dumping on the streets, stressing that it is linked to the high cost of garbage disposal paid to WAMCO.

Mayor Azim revealed that an impressive 300 tonnes of garbage have been cleared from the city in the last 20 days alone. Despite these efforts, the problem of illegal dumping persists, particularly in areas like Male' city and Hulhumale'.

One contributing factor to the rise in illegal dumping is the exorbitant price of garbage disposal by pickup trucks. While the standard fee for garbage disposal stands at MVR 50, some trucks charge as much as MVR 1,500 for the same service.

To combat the issue of littering, authorities are now turning to technology, employing CCTV cameras to identify individuals responsible for dumping garbage on the streets. Once identified, these individuals will be required to remove the litter, marking a step forward in tackling the ongoing challenge of street littering.
