MP Mohamed Shifau has called not to mock mentally ill people but rather work on offering a way for proper treatment.

Parliament Member Shifau's call comes after the Minister of Language, Culture, and Heritage, Adam Naseer Ibrahim, said that he is working on a way to provide treatment for mentally ill patients by using Maldivian poetry.

In response, MP Shifau said that mental illness is not a joke and you can only understand it when you have to endure it.

"Mentally ill patients need the help of everyone in society. It is wise for ministers not to make fun of the sick but to provide them with treatment," MP Shifau said.

Speaking at an event held in Thinadhoo to celebrate Poetry Day in the Maldives, Minister Naseer said that poetry is used to treat mental issues in many developed countries.

Therefore, the ministry is working to see if it can be done using poetry, said the Minister in his speech.

In addition, the Minister stated that poetry is a tool for health treatment, and research has shown that poems can bring happiness to people suffering from mental illnesses and divert them from negative thoughts.
