Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture, Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has stated the government will provide a way to get the full benefits of the fisheries industry.

The minister said this in a panel discussion on the topic of “The Future of Maldivian Fisheries” at the Maldives Accountants Forum.

He stated that even though the government cannot provide too much financially, the fisheries industry will not be neglected.

Even if it was at a loss, the government will not stop purchasing fish, and even though the country is in a bad state financially, the government will aid the fisheries industry and provide a way to get the full benefits of the industry, Hussain added.

“We promise that the government wants to make the fisheries industry profitable. We are committed to this,” the minister stated noting that the government is making good investments in the fisheries industry.

Speaking about the fish weighing options provided by the government to fishermen, the minister said that while 100 tonnes were weighed daily at Lh. Felivaru has cold storage with a capacity of 2000 tonnes, and work is being done at Kooddoo to increase the cannery capacity to 4000 tonnes.

Furthermore, he stated that work is being done to increase the storage capacity for frozen fish. While there is a capacity of 240 tonnes now, Hussain added that it will be increased to 500.
