Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar has reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the decentralization system, describing it as a key priority of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Kaafu Forum 2025, organized by the Kaafu Atoll Council for councils in Kaafu Atoll, the Minister said decentralization is the greatest gift provided to the people under the Constitution. He added that President Muizzu has already transferred many powers previously held by the central government to local councils.
The Minister said the government aims to further reinforce the system and will continue to make improvements while remaining aligned with decentralization principles.
He noted that the President has met with all island councils across the country and is actively working to address the proposals raised during those meetings.
Reflecting on his earlier work in the education sector, the Minister said the public service must always focus on fulfilling the needs of the people. He also highlighted that the Local Government Authority (LGA) is supported by a capable team and assured that he will continue working closely with the LGA to advance decentralized governance.
