President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the opening of Hanimaadhoo International Airport marks not just the launch of major infrastructure, but the beginning of a new chapter in the development of the Greater Thiladhunmathi region.

Speaking at the colourful inauguration ceremony held in HDh. Hanimaadhoo, the President said the project reflects “vision, transformation, and success.” Developed with loan assistance from India’s EXIM Bank, the airport’s redevelopment was accelerated under his administration after delays caused public concern.

President Muizzu said the airport would unlock the potential of the northern atolls and connect them more effectively to the rest of the world. He urged international airlines to begin operations to Hanimaadhoo and encouraged Maldivian businesses to invest in the northern region.

Highlighting the project’s economic benefits, the President said it would generate new employment opportunities and boost tourism, particularly with the upcoming resort development in HDh. Naagoashi.

The 2,465-metre runway was inaugurated by a Maldivian A320 aircraft carrying President Muizzu — the largest aircraft ever to land at the airport.

Hanimaadhoo was first designated as an international airport in 2012, but redevelopment progress stalled for years. The upgraded facility now includes an aerobridge — making it one of only two airports in the Maldives with this feature — and a modern passenger terminal spanning 10,380 square metres, capable of handling 1.3 million passengers annually.

The ceremony was attended by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Indian Minister of Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, state officials, foreign dignitaries, and residents of Hanimaadhoo.
