Twenty-one-year-old Arya Rajendran became the next Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram on Monday after tasting victory in the recent civic polls in Kerala.

Arya Rajendran is a Communist Party of India (Marxist) party member and began her political journey as a child activist in Balasangam, the children’s organization affiliated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist). She became the state president of the Balasangam later and while in college, Arya Rajendran became a member of the Students Federation of India (SFI), the students’ wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

During the election, Arya Rajendra defeated the BJP’s Simi Jyothish. With her appointment as Thiruvananthapuram mayor, Arya Rajendran also broke the record held by Sabitha Beegam who became the youngest Indian mayor when she took over the Kollam municipal corporation in Kerala in 2000.

As a Mayor, Arya Rajendran has listed setting up more primary health centers and waste management in Thiruvananthapuram, among the priorities.
Arya, now a second-year graduate student of a city college, became the youngest-ever Mayor in the country.

Arya Rajendran is still pursuing her graduation course — BSc (Mathematics) from the All Saints College in Kerala's capital.
