Health Minister Abdullah Khaleel announced today that dialysis services will soon be accessible in all atoll hospitals across the Maldives by the end of this year. The move comes as part of the government's broader strategy to enhance healthcare accessibility and alleviate the burden on medical facilities in the capital.

Minister Khaleel made the announcement during a parliamentary session while responding to queries from lawmakers. He emphasized the government's commitment to extending essential medical services to the atolls, where demand for healthcare services is high. Minister said, CT scans, MRI, and dialysis services can be introduced in atoll hospitals to alleviate the burden on IGMH, a state-owned multispecialty hospital in the capital.

With overcrowding a persistent issue at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Minister Khaleel highlighted the importance of decentralizing healthcare services to alleviate pressure on central facilities. By establishing more services in the atolls and bolstering medical staff and facilities, the government aims to enhance healthcare accessibility and quality nationwide.

The expansion of dialysis services is particularly crucial in light of the increasing prevalence of kidney disease in the Maldives. Currently, over 150 individuals in the Male' area alone require dialysis treatment, with many more residing in the atolls. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the government is taking proactive steps to ensure that essential medical services are readily available to those in need.

In addition to expanding dialysis services, the government has inaugurated a National Urology and Regional Fertility Center at the IGMH, further bolstering the country's healthcare infrastructure. These initiatives underscore the government's commitment to improving healthcare outcomes and ensuring that all citizens have access to quality medical care, regardless of their geographical location.
