The newly elected members of the 20th Parliament in the Maldives are set to be sworn in next month, as announced by Speaker Aslam on Tuesday. The ongoing 19th parliamentary session will continue until the 15th of next month, with the final session scheduled for the 13th of next month.

Speaker Aslam specified that the swearing-in ceremony for the new MPs will take place on the 28th of next month. In the recent parliamentary elections, a total of 93 members were elected to the 20th parliament, succeeding the 87 members elected to the 19th parliament.

The ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC) secured a significant victory in the latest elections, clinching 66 seats, with an additional eight seats won by government-backed MPs. Conversely, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) suffered a substantial defeat, securing only 12 seats.

The election outcome reflects a supermajority for both the PNC and the MDP, indicating significant shifts in the political landscape. As the country prepares for the swearing-in of the new parliamentarians, anticipation looms regarding the policy agenda and legislative priorities of the incoming parliament.
