Japan has announced its decision to resume funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), marking a significant step in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. This move comes after a temporary halt in funding following allegations linking UNRWA employees to a Hamas attack last October.

After discussions between Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa and UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini in Tokyo, Japan has expressed its commitment to restarting contributions to UNRWA. Emphasizing the importance of bolstering governance and transparency measures within the agency, Japan aims to reinstate funding by the first half of April.

The decision to resume funding aligns with recent moves by other countries, including Australia, Canada, and Sweden, to resume aid to UNRWA. Despite challenges posed by the funding suspension, Lazzarini has reassured that UNRWA has secured sufficient funds to sustain operations until at least the end of May.

Japan's decision underscores its dedication to humanitarian relief efforts and its recognition of the vital role UNRWA plays in providing essential assistance to Palestinian refugees. Despite ongoing scrutiny and internal investigations, UNRWA remains committed to its mandate of delivering vital aid and services to those in need, including food aid and healthcare services.
