Two German women have been arrested in Hulhumale', for allegedly spreading Christianity in the public housing flat area, the Maldives Police Service confirmed today. The arrests came after illegal signs containing links to Christian websites were found in mailboxes within the housing complex.

According to authorities, the two women arrived in the Maldives on tourist visas. They are currently under investigation for their involvement in distributing illicit materials.

Photographs of the business cards written in Dhivehi, the local language of the Maldives, found in mailboxes containing links to Christian websites have been circulating on social media, prompting concerns about potential religious proselytization activities in the predominantly Muslim country.

The dissemination of non-Islamic religious materials is prohibited in the Maldives, where Islam is the official state religion.

Authorities have not disclosed further details about the ongoing investigation.
