Minister of State for External Affairs, H.E Shri V. Muraleedharan has inaugrated the eco-tourism zones developed in Hithadhoo and Feydhoo, Addu City.

Eco-tourism zones are developed in Addu City, jointly with support from the Government of India. India and Maldives signed MoUs in February 2020 for establishment of five eco-tourism zones in Feydhoo, Meedhoo, Hithadhoo, Hulhudhoo and Maradhoo in Addu through a total grant allocation of approx. USD 2.49 million (MVR 38 million).

Out of the five eco-tourism zones, Meedhoo eco-tourism zone was completed and inaugurated in March 2022. Hithadhoo and Feydhoo eco-tourism zones were completed inaugrated today.

During a special ceremony held at Addu City Hithadhoo and Feydhoo eco-tourism zones were inaugrated by the Minister of State for External Affairs India, H.E Shri V. Muraleedharan, along with Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Abdulla Shahid.

These eco-tourism zones are designed to attract investments in tourism sector in Addu, with an aim to develop 8000 tourist beds in Addu City. However, prior to opening up of these tourism zones for investment, there was a need to landscape them and to establish utility services.

The scope of works in the tourism development projects includes; undertaking landscaping work in designated areas, developing public beaches in designated areas, Establishing electric installations and all required provisions for the utility services in the designated areas, installing street/garden furniture in the designated areas.

Investing in the development of tourism zones is expected to generate jobs in the guest houses, and related revenue generating activities such as the running of cottage businesses, operating of tourist guide businesses, sea sports and other services.
