First Lady of the Maldives; Madam Fazna Ahmed
In celebration of the international day of sign language, First Lady of the Maldives, Madam Fazna Ahmed tells a children's story in sign language to raise awareness of the importance of sign language.

The president's office of the Maldives released Madam Fazna’s story in a video message. The “Man and the tree” story is about the disadvantages of cutting trees. In the video message Madam Fazna appealed in sign language for everyone to learn basic sign language to promote greater inclusion of children and adults with hearing and speech impairments.



The celebration of the International Day of Sign Languages recognizes the importance of preserving sign languages as part of linguistic and cultural diversity. It also emphasizes the principle of “nothing about us without us” in terms of working with deaf communities.

The theme for International Day of Sign Languages 2020 is “Sign Languages are for Everyone!”
