Former MDP chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has alleged that the Election Commission (EC) is acting to deliver election results favored by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in the upcoming polls.
In a post on X, Fayyaz expressed concern over a rule adopted by the EC to determine seats for local council elections, claiming the decision was made to suit the ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC). He said the rule was unclear and not publicly explained.
Fayyaz noted that previously only female candidates could contest seats decided by drawing lots, but alleged that EC has now changed the arrangement in line with President Muizzu’s wishes. He said such actions undermine public confidence in the independence of the Election Commission.
The former MDP chairperson also accused EC leadership of attempting to please the president, warning that this further erodes trust in the electoral process.
The Election Commission has not yet responded to the allegations.
