The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, in partnership with SME Digital, has launched a Mariculture Scheme to promote the growth of mariculture as a key industry in the Maldives. The initiative aims to support both existing businesses and new entrepreneurs looking to enter the sector by providing financial assistance for the purchase of sea cages, a critical resource for mariculture operations.

Under the scheme, SME Digital will offer Shariah-compliant financing for up to 200 sea cages, with facility amounts ranging from MVR 80,000 to MVR 640,000. The repayment period is set at up to six years, including a six-month grace period, allowing beneficiaries flexible and manageable terms to scale or establish their businesses.

The initiative is expected to encourage new investments in the fisheries sector, expand mariculture activities, and contribute to economic growth across the Maldives.

Applications for the Mariculture Scheme will open on December 13, 2025, via the SME Digital portal.
