President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has described fishing as the most honored and uniquely Maldivian profession, highlighting its deep cultural and historical significance to the nation.

In a message shared on his official social media platforms to mark National Fishermen’s Day, the President said fishing has been intertwined with Maldivian life since the earliest settlement of the islands. He noted that marine resources have long served as the country’s main source of sustenance and continue to shape its identity and economy.

President Muizzu reiterated the Administration’s commitment to expanding and modernizing the fisheries sector. He emphasized plans to diversify production, increase the income of fishing families, and maximize the economic benefits gained from the fisheries value chain. He added that the Government aims to create greater opportunities for fishermen as part of its broader development agenda.

The President concluded his message by extending Fishermen’s Day greetings to everyone working in the sector and to their families.

Fishermen’s Day is observed annually on 10 December, with this year’s national celebrations held in R. Dhuvaafaru.
