Former President and long-serving Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader Mohamed Nasheed has announced that he will fully support the party in its campaign for the upcoming local council elections.

Nasheed made the remarks in a message shared on social media, where he congratulated the newly elected interim chairperson and Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo). Nasheed urged Ghafoor to prioritize strengthening unity within the party as it prepares for a crucial electoral cycle.

He also assured that the MDP would receive his complete cooperation as it works toward securing victory in the council elections.

Nasheed’s comments follow a press conference held earlier in the day, during which Ghafoor acknowledged increasing unrest among senior party members. Internal tensions have intensified since Nasheed rejoined the MDP, leading to disputes within leadership circles.

According to recent exchanges in an MDP WhatsApp group involving Nasheed, President Solih, and former chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, have further highlighted the divisions within the party as well.
