The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has elected Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo) as its interim chairperson.

Ghafoor was chosen with 65 votes out of the 66 members present at a recent meeting of the MDP National Assembly. He was the only candidate for the post, following weeks of internal disagreements within the party.

An earlier attempt to elect an interim chairman had been disrupted after disputes arose over the number of votes required to approve candidate Ibrahim Waheed (Wadde). Tensions escalated when the secretariat stated that 48 votes were required, triggering objections and prompting Wadde to withdraw his candidacy after it was announced that he received 47 votes.

The chairmanship became vacant after former chairman Fayyaz Ismail resigned on November 23. With Ghafoor now elected, the MDP hopes to restore stability to its leadership ahead of upcoming political activities.
