Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has underscored the Maldives’ growing climate vulnerabilities and renewed the country’s call for stronger international support during a roundtable session held on the sidelines of the fourth EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum.

Speaking at the session titled “Common Endeavors for a Clean and Sustainable Future”, Minister Khaleel highlighted the Maldives’ ambitious targets outlined in its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). These include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 1.52 million tonnes by 2035, generating 33% of national electricity from renewable energy by 2028, and embedding climate resilience into all aspects of sustainable development planning.

Dr. Khaleel stressed that assistance for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is “not only a matter of equity, but a strategic investment in global resilience,” noting that climate impacts faced by nations like the Maldives have far-reaching consequences.

He also praised the European Union’s climate efforts, including the European Green Deal and the “Fit for 55” package, describing them as important frameworks that enable stronger cooperation in tackling the global climate crisis.
