Former Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer has said the Malé City Council is the most important tool the MDP can use to challenge President Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.

Speaking at an MDP gathering, Ameer said opportunities for the opposition to hold the government accountable are limited, whether through Parliament, councils, or party activities. He criticized the current administration, describing it as cruel, deceitful, and corrupt.

Ameer stressed that Malé plays a decisive role in national politics and economics, noting that decisions made in the capital influence the entire country. He accused the government of targeting MDP members in the Malé City Council by sending them to the Anti-Corruption Commission without justification.

He said MDP councillors remain committed to serving Malé residents and voiced his support for Ali Azim in the party’s mayoral primary, noting that Azim has no personal interests that would hinder his service.

Ameer said the party’s priority now is to work toward a better future for the Maldives and prepare to win the 2028 presidential election, calling for unity within the MDP.
