Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa of the MDP Parliamentary Group has accused the government of neglecting public needs while engaging in wasteful spending and corruption.

Speaking in Parliament on Monday, Ghafoor claimed the administration is “on vacation under Visit Maldives,” alleging frequent overseas trips, parties funded by public money, and embezzlement.

He criticized the government for failing to investigate managing directors dismissed over theft allegations and said state-owned companies such as FSM have long been involved in misappropriation, with many implicated individuals still employed.

Ghafoor also called for the abolition of state companies CIFCO and POLCO. He suggested that the police, military, and correctional services should manage their responsibilities. The MP urged stronger laws to allow tagging and jailing of those who commit theft.

He further questioned why the ruling PNC has not probed allegations of corruption against the former MDP government, noting that after two years in office, no one has been convicted over major scandals.

His remarks came as Parliament Vice-President Ahmed Nazim revealed that only MVR 14.6 million of the MVR 1.4 billion lost in the MMPRC corruption scandal has been recovered.
