The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has denied claims that key components of the flat agreements under the previous administration were removed, calling the allegations baseless and politically motivated.

The statement came in response to remarks made by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) Managing Director Hamdan Shakeel, who alleged that the former government had excluded essential services such as electricity, water, internet connectivity, security systems, and waste management from the flat agreements for the 4,000 housing units built under the Gedhoruveriya Housing Scheme.

In a statement issued today, the MDP, which led the previous government under President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, clarified that all flats built under the Homeowner Scheme were designed with modern standards and included provisions for utilities such as water, electricity, telephone lines, cable TV, and internet connections. The party said these works were to be jointly completed by the government and FDC after contractors finalized construction.

The MDP further stressed that any suggestion of omissions from the original agreement is false, noting that no clause was removed unless explicitly stated in the contract.

“These claims are an attempt to deflect from the current government’s failure to complete the works and a misrepresentation of the facts now that the flats are being handed over,” the MDP said.

The 4,000-flat housing project was financed by the Exim Bank of India and contracted to two Indian companies. It includes 2,800 three-bedroom units and 1,200 two-bedroom units built across 32 towers.
