An earthquake that struck near the Nicobar Islands late last night was felt in parts of the Maldives but poses no danger, the Maldives Meteorological Service has confirmed.
The 6.2 magnitude quake occurred at 11:41 p.m. local time, according to the Indian National Meteorological Agency. The Maldives' seismic monitoring system in Kaadedhdhoo recorded the tremors at 11:48 p.m.
The Met Office stated that the earthquake did not generate a tsunami and is not expected to have any impact on the Maldives. However, light tremors were reported by residents in some areas, including parts of Malé and hulhumale'.
Authorities emphasized that there is no ongoing threat.
