President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the opening of the new Valana International Terminal represents a significant step forward in strengthening the Maldives’ economic independence.

In an Independence Day address on SanguTV, President Muizzu said the terminal is the largest and most vital project ever undertaken in the country’s tourism and aviation sectors. He emphasized that it will play a central role in enhancing the Maldives’ economic freedom.

The President noted that one of his first visits after taking office was to the terminal project site. He recalled that the foundation stone was laid during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, under whom Muizzu served as a minister and monitored the project closely. He also acknowledged the contributions of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in advancing the project.

Muizzu pointed out that when the current government assumed office, much of the work required to make the terminal operational had not begun, including key collection systems. He credited the current administration's urgent efforts for accelerating the project’s timeline, which would have otherwise extended beyond 2027.

He expressed appreciation for the dedication of airport workers and other stakeholders involved in the project. The President reaffirmed that the government's efforts were critical in reviving and completing key elements of the development.
